Calories in a banana may be the last thing you want to think about when chomping on the elongated fruit. But if you’re on a diet, putting it on top of your head could be wise. Why? That’s because bananas are full of carbohydrates which could add up pretty easily. Overtime. Yes, indeed. You may not have heard of people getting fat via banana overconsumption. The truth of the matter is, bananas contain carbohydrates that can make you lose your diet in no time. So, there is nothing wrong with knowing how much you’re putting in when seizing the monkey’s favorite fruit. On the contrary, you’re better off that way. 

Many people take bananas for granted. Thinking that there is nothing much to know about the common market fruit. Bananas may come in all sizes. True. But every one of them has one thing in common: starchy texture, fair and not too heavy. Plus, you really can’t miss that sweet flavor that’s just mild when compared to other fruits of the tropical nature. And if you pick them when unripe, no worries they’ll ripen on their own even when away from the mother plant. Strange, right?

Then again, there are differences from one banana type to another. Below are some of the most common types of bananas you’ll see in a farmer’s market. 

1. Cavendish Bananas

Perhaps, it’s best to start with the most common. Chances are, if you’re to go on a supermarket tour across America, this variety is going to greet you wherever you go. Yup. They are colored yellow with a slightly sweet taste. When under-ripe they’re green but change to a mellowed yellow when ripe. When browning, they go super soft. 

If you want to make a smoothie, you can throw super-ripe Cavendish in the refrigerator and get to enjoy one in no time. 

2. Apple Bananas

If you want bananas to be as sweet as can be, then you won’t go wrong with apple bananas. They’re as sweet than most bananas; the reason why they’re also named Candy Apple Banana. An army is grown in Hawaii and many parts of Asia, most notably the Philippines. 

As they’re sweeter than most fruit, they’re a top pick in snacking. Or for that matter, as desserts. Also, they are perfect for fruit salads and in other mixtures involving raw preparations. Why? Apple bananas don’t get too brown easily compared to other varieties. 

3. Lady’s Finger Bananas

As the name suggests, this type of banana is smaller than your regular in-market yellow banana. But there’s a catch. They might be diminutive in size, but they’re sweeter than the Cavendish. The best way to serve them is as a portion-controlled snack. And yes, the kids will love it. 

4. Red Bananas

Yup. These strange-looking bananas may not be your regular guy. They will stand out in any market. But don’t put them aside as yet. Not only are they super-cool, but they’re also sweet and delicious. Like most bananas, you can eat them right away when ripe or you can choose to put them as part and parcel of your dishes. The key thing to remember here is that when they’ve turned red, they’re ready for consumption. So don’t take too long putting them to use as they could get overripe in no time. 

5. Pisang Raja

These bananas are extremely popular in Asia, particularly in Indonesia. There, people use them extensively as banana fritters. Alternatively, these bananas are also dubbed as Musa Belle bananas. Great to start your day!

How Much Calories In Each Type

Calories in bananas depend much on their weight. Obviously, the greater its weight the higher the calories of a banana have. If you’re not that sure, you can put an estimate of an average (size) banana as registering about 100 calories.

Now, if you’re wondering how many calories a sliced banana would give you, the answer depends on the weight of the fruit. One cup of about 150 grams banana would give you about 130 calories. More or less. 

However, mashed banana in a cup would be denser. One cup at 225 grams should give you about 200 calories. Most of the calories from bananas come from their carbs. To be exact, 93 percent overall, while only 4 percent comes from protein. The remaining 3 percent can be traced to banana fat. \

Why Calories in a Banana Matters

So long as it’s food, it’s got calories. Even liquid soda has calories. Things can add up easily, and when they do, you could be putting your diet in jeopardy. 

Once you’ve loosened yourself in watching your intake, you’re bound to balloon in weight. Making your planned diet anything but useful. 

The good news is calories in a banana aren’t as bad as you might think. At least not in comparison to other less nutritious food options. In a sense, bananas aren’t bad for your health.
